The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has reportedly launched an investigation into a group of former CID officials and journalists on the allegations that classified information involving the assassination of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunga were exposed.
Accordingly Journalist Srilal Priyantha, Editor of Ethalaya Magazine, was summoned to the CID for interrogation on July 14, on the basis of a report published on the magazine, titled, “Lasantha Wickrematunga Ghathanaye Rahasigatha Thoraturu Eliyata” (Secret Information on Lasantha Wickrematunga Murder Exposed).
The Ethalaya Editor has been questioned by the CID as to who leaked information on the telephone numbers of the killers of the slain Journalist, and Priyantha has denied to disclose his sources, according to reports.
In this regard, a statement has also been recorded from former CID director Shani Abeysekara, and Assistant Police Superintendent B.S. Thisera, who was leading the homicide investigation and has currently been transferred to Badulla is set for interrogation on July 20, reports further claimed.
In the chain of events, it is conclusive that the CID has spared their protocol on finding the killers of Wickrematunga and channeled into finding who leaked classified information involving the case, whilst suppressing media independence.
